Résumé / Abstract
This paper discusses research currently being undertaken to develop a valid, reliable, inexpensive, quick to complete and easy to administer test capable of objectively measuring the impact of driver distraction on activities critical for safe driving when the driver engages in a secondary activity. Few distraction impact assessment tools exist, and those that do have certain limitations. In this paper, we describe research currently being undertaken to develop a driver distraction impact assessment test that attempts to overcome some of these limitations. While the test has neither been fully developed nor scientifically validated, the critical steps in designing and validating it are discussed. The test, when completed, is intended to be implementable on both a PC and a driving simulator and to be suitable as both a product evaluation tool and as a research tool for measuring the effects of distraction on driving performance.
