Résumé / Abstract
Traditionally train control and signalling systems have been relying heavily on human operators. However, with the advances in technology, electronic systems have become not only economical to use but also increasingly reliable to gain the confidence of human operators. In this paper, we focus on some important features of the modern train control systems. We emphasize that multiple sensors have to be used to design a reliable and fail-safe control system. We explain why the information originating from various sensors, must be processed rapidly in real time. We propose a multiprocessor architecture for dealing with these issues. We also propose measures to ensure redundancy in the architecture for fail-safe operation. We use FPGA as the implementation platform for ensuring flexibility and scalability of the system with the minimum possible cost.
