Metamaterial for trainborne antenna integration and reduction of EMI between onboard systems in the railway environment

Résumé / Abstract
There are several existing techniques to manage EMI between onboard systems such as antenna processing schemes but these techniques do not contribute to reduce EM pollution. They can only ensure a better signal processing in the context EM interference. However, a metamaterial solution, by proposing a higher degree of freedom for the design of antennas or wireless devices, can contribute to a more efficient multiple-system management while accounting for a lower net EM pollution. Specific, user-defined spatial or frequency filtering can be realised beyond the fundamental limits of natural materials. This approach can allow, for instance, to compensate or to take advantage of the materials surrounding a wireless system to propose novel antenna solutions which can be integrated directly into the vehicle body. Different methodologies will be developed within the railway industry constraints such as: EM material and environment characterisation at high frequencies, Design methods for metamaterial antenna for integration on railway vehicles, Numerical and physical models and laboratory test methods for metamaterial structures integration on large structures to restrict the number of in-situ tests. Our paper is organised as follows. In section 2, the METAPHORT project will be described in terms of its objectives and methodologies which will be developed. The scope of the project will be defined and the research work required to attempt a technological transfer of the metamaterial technology to the railway industry will be explained. In section 3, we will focus mainly on the antenna design and integration methodology developed in the context of this project. The introduction of metamaterials in the proposed methodology will be described. Finally in section 4, we present our first results obtained on this topic.
