Résumé / Abstract

This paper describes the STAIRS (standardisation of accident information and registration) project, funded under the fourth framework research programme. The project will develop a harmonised procedure for the in-depth investigation of crashes for the purpose of improved vehicle crashworthiness and safety regulations. Key areas to be addressed include a core dataset; the national crash population; data quality; data processing and exchange; statistical methods for data analysis; terminology and ethical considerations.
