Résumé / Abstract
Lane changes are an important factor in traffic operations on motorways, but there frequency has not been intensively studied before. Here several measures of lane-changing are proposed - the absolute number of lane changes and the number of lane changes relative to other traffic characteristics, like density, distance travelled and total time spent. The paper then tests the different methods on data collected from the United Kingdom's M42 motorway under a range of free flow traffic conditions. This analysis shows that the number of lane changes per kilometer is rather flat, varying between 1 lane change per vehicle kilometer in very light traffic conditions to 0.5 lane change per vehicle kilometer at densities near capacity.
