Résumé / Abstract
Since 2005, a project involving several academic laboratories, HELION (AREVA subsidiary) fuel cell manufacturer and two end-users, SNCF (French National Railway Company) and the DGA (French Government Military Agency), was conducted to develop and to build an air/H2 80kWe PEM fuel cell (PEMFC) based system for transportation applications. The fuel cell system was designed to be tested on the hybrid locomotive demonstrator "LHyDIE" and on the four-wheel-drive hybrid demonstrator truck "ECCE". Concurrent to technological developments, an important scientific study was put in place to improve the performance and lifetime of the produced fuel cells. This study considered on the influence o f the operating parameters as well as transport constraints and environmental exposure ( driving cycles, vibrations, shocks, gas pollution~). The aging tests were typically conducted for 1,000 hours on samples of three scales: 9 W - single cell, 600 W - pilot stack and 30 kW - stack. More than 27,000 hours of effective operation in various conditions were performed on the samples. In this paper, we propose to describe the scientific approach and the experimental process involved within this project, combining the partners' competences to produce a full scale PEM fuel cell system dedicated to transport applications. The main results concerning the influence of operating parameters and effects of environment exposure on the performance, durability and reliability of the system are presented.
