C'est sur les dessertes terminales que se joue en grande partie la compétitivité du transport combiné rail-route. Selon les performances qui y sont obtenues, la théorie montre que l'offre combinée reste compétitive dans un périmètre plus ou moins large, délimitant ainsi l'aire de marché des centres de transbordement. L'analyse approfondie d'une entreprise de transport utilisant la technique combinée a permis la compréhension d'une logique d'organisation des dessertes terminales. Le processus de production adopté répond aux contraintes subies par l'entreprise et nous montrons comment celles-ci se répercutent sur les conditions de travail des conducteurs. Cette étude de cas apporte également une mesure des performances routières terminales, un relevé de la localisation de la clientèle desservie à l'aide du transport combiné et une confrontation entre la théorie et la situation concrète d'un transporteur. L'approche théorique se trouve ainsi validée. Elle apparaît dès lors comme un outil adapté à l'analyse d'une grande variété de situations. The competitiveness of rail-road combined transport deeply depends on road transport services before and after the rail segment. According to the performances that are obtained in road service from terminals, theory shows that the combined supply stays competitive in a more or less large area around terminals, which is called the terminal market area. The in-depth analysis of a transport company making use of combined transport techniques makes us understand one logic of organizing road service from terminals. The adopted production process answers the constraints the firm is going through. We show how these constraints have repercussions on the drivers' working conditions. This case study also gives a measure of the performances of road service from terminals ; it shows where the customers are for whom combined transport is being used. Then, we set up a confrontation between theory and the concrete example of a firm. Thus, the theoretical approach is validated. It appears consequently as a suitable tool for analyzing a great diversity of cases.
