Résumé / Abstract
In a context of climate change, a traditional approach to achieve modal change has been through the provision of transport services and infrastructures. Even if this is necessary, it is of limited value if people are unaware of their existence or their improvements. This paper relies on two sociological researches based on qualitative in-depth interviews and carried out in Paris Region, France. They demonstrate that there is a lack of information about the alternatives to the individual use of the car and about the environmental issues. They show that information can play a significant role in change: it provides mobility knowledge and tools necessary to increase individuals' abilities to travel. It increases environmental concern and thus promotes the acceptability of change and public policy which limits car use. This paper examines the role of information constructing modal choice and increasing ecological concerns. It shows also that information is not always sufficient.
