Résumé / Abstract
This paper presents the main results of a research programme that looked at the impact of specific polycentric urban forms on commuting patterns. Comparisons were made between 3 urban areas in France (as defined by INSEE): the Lille conurbation, with 4 centres of fairly similar size, i.e. the city of Lille itself, Roubaix, Tourcoing and, more recently, Villeneuve-d'Ascq; Lyon, which is largely made up of monocentric localities, despite the presence of several employment poles; and Marseille-Aix, which is essentially duocentric, with Marseille and Aix-en-Provence as its 2 structuring centres. Our aim was to determine the influence of these 3 urban forms on the commuting behaviour of those who live and work there.
