Résumé / Abstract
This report presents the different techniques that are used in the US and in Japan to assess the seismic risk of bridges and the major retrofitting techniques. It is divided in 4 chapters. The first three chapters correspond to the three steps that could be used in the assessment-retrofitting projects : - Prioritization scheme (ch 2) which deals with the order in which bridges will be assessed and retrofitted. Generally, most vulnerable and most economically valuable bridge will be considered first - Detailed analysis of seismic risk (ch 3) delas with assessment method for a specific bridge. This step provides data on the capacity of the bridge and also on place where retrofitting is necessary. - Retrofitting techniques (ch 3) are then presented. The fourth chapter, illustrate the detailed analysis and the retrofitting project on the example of the Warth Bridge which was studied in the VAB project, sponsored by the European Community. Some recommendations for further research conclude the document.
