Résumé / Abstract
Traffic signal control at intersections plays a significant role in mobility, traffic safety, and the city environment. In France, the state and local authorities have put a great deal of effort into improving intersection control. Over the last few decades, fixed-time traffic signal control, as a simple and centralized control method, has been well performed in this country. Moreover, some distinctive configurations of intersections have also been designed, such as roundabouts, signalized intersections with central islands, and intersections integrated with tramway systems. Accordingly, these intersections (only with signalization) are implemented by different traffic signal control systems. In this chapter, we investigate the developments and implementations of signal control in the country, and explore fixed-time control strategies, as well as the signal timing process in the conditions of pedestrian crossing and left-turn traffic. We also introduce a fixed-time solution for traffic at a signalized intersection with a central island. Roundabouts are especially considered. As a perspective, fixed-time control systems could be jointed with other traffic management strategies, for instance, transit signal priority and connected vehicle technology, to improve intersection management in the future.
