Résumé / Abstract
For the last 20 years, many scholars interested in dimensions of rural change have applied the concept of 'gentrification' as a framework for understanding certain types of demographic and economic shifts playing out in rural spaces. While rural gentrification has gained acceptance and spawned a sizeable literature, especially amongst scholars working in the UK and the US, methodologically, this scholarship has been dominated by case study approaches. These case study approaches provide deep understanding of gentrification processes in particular places, but little is known about the extent of rural gentrification across space. This paper describes the process of building a database of comparable rural gentrification indicators across three national contexts; the US, UK, and France, and this database will allow for a more extensive understanding of rural gentrification's scope and form across space. We pay particular attention to questions of scale as well as definitions of rurality. This paper is one component of a larger collaborative project attempting the first international comparative analysis of rural gentrification.
