Pedestrian-motorcyclist road accidents: case study of Bogota

Pedestrians and motorcyclists are vulnerable actors of the road since they receive the impact of a collision directly in their bodies. Traffic accidents that involve these two actors have serious consequences, especially for pedestrians. This paper focuses attention on pedestrian-motorcyclist accidents, through the case study of a series of events occurred in the past at urban level. The methodology used for this research is based on the model Accident Prototypical Scenarios, which was developed in France (MA-IFSTTAR). Based on a detailed study of seventy-four cases occurred in 2009 in Bogota, six groups of pedestrian-motorcyclist road accidents were formed. The grouping was based on the characteristics of the infrastructure that the pedestrian was crossing at the moment of the accident; it includes a special group of accident that involves the presence of a child pedestrian. The results of the analysis show that the lack of experience of the motorcyclist in driving the vehicle, as well as the wide cross section of urban roads, are some of the factors that 56 contribute to the generation of this type of accidents.
