Résumé / Abstract
The purpose of this research synthesis is to summarize the literature and best practices regarding the management of truck and van transport in urban areas. Truck transport is crucial for the delivery of goods and services within metropolitan areas. Trucks and vans provide the 'last-mile/first-mile' transport, as well as most medium haul freight transport. In metropolitan areas that serve as trade hubs, trucks are a major part of wholesaling,
distribution, logistics, and intermodal operations. Truck traffic generates significant externalities in metropolitan areas, including congestion, emissions, noise, and traffic incidents. Metropolitan areas throughout the United States, Europe, and the world are seeking ways to better manage truck traffic.
