Résumé / Abstract
Today, the over-representation of young drivers in road accidents is a view shared by all. However, confusion persists about the involvement of factors ‘driving experience' and 'age' in road accident of young people. Indeed, it is common to compare 18 years old people who just obtained their licenses to drivers of 30 years old and over, who have a license for many years. Therefore, it is difficult to differentiate the influence of driving experience of people from that of age-related factors (risk-taking, lifestyle ...). We propose an original experimental protocol that will highlight the effects related to the driving experience and those related to age and their possible interaction. A dual task paradigm was used in this study to investigate the effect of increased workload on the driving behavior depending one driving experience and age of participants. A car-following task and number identification task were used. In the car-following task, drivers tried to maintain a predetermined distance from a leading vehicle as it varied its speed. Two levels of workload were examined by manipulating the amplitude of the leading vehicle speed variation. In the number identification task, drivers identified if the number is even or odd. The performance in the car-following task was assessed by using objective measures (distance headway, standard deviation of distance headway, sinusoide). The performance in the number identification was measured by using accuracy and response time. We assume a further deterioration in dual task performance in young drivers. Analyses performed permit to study both the impact of driving experience and age of drivers.
