Résumé / Abstract
Among the road safety problems identified in a general diagnosis, urban safety appears in many countries as a priority target, first because a large proportion of the accidents (if not always the most serious ones) occur in urban areas, and second, because personal safety is seen by the public as an integral part of the quality of urban life. The paper provides an overview of safety policies in urban areas. Characteristics of urban roads and traffic, resulting priorities, and the types of preventive measures implemented in cities are specific enough to deserve particular attention. In addition, a large number of actors are usually responsible for urban planning, street construction and maintenance, transport management, or other areas related to traffic safety, and they often work on different bases and with different primary objectives : these objectives and the conflicts that may occur have to be known in order to design acceptable and feasible safety measures.
