Résumé / Abstract
The local preparatory information system is a new kind of driver aiding system with a bi-directional dynamic exchange of information. An experiment with one of the prototypes of this system, the aida system, (application to motorway information - application pour l'information des autoroutes) took place in a real situation to evaluate the information contribution, the credibility and the adequacy of the response to the event as well as the tactical and strategic driving behavior. This study shows that the driver aiding system basically doesn't modify the driving habits of the drivers, but develops in them a cautionary behavior which manifests itself by a reduction of speed followed by a braking action or a relaxation of the accelerator pedals, in particular when approaching an accident area. Drivers' mental workload is on the whole reduced in the case of the driving with the pre-information system because the relevant information comes at the right time in relation to the driver's actions. In the case of the referenced situation without the pre-information system, the visual strategies are modified. A detailed study of the driver's visual strategies shows significant differences between the two experimental situations - namely with and without the information systems. A new dispatching of visual attention allocation is observed: on one hand, a specific reading task is caused by the in car visual display, but on the other hand, the effort in order to discover the relevant information outside is drastically reduced. This system, then, reassures the subject and keeps him from needing additional outside information in order to react properly to the situation.
