Résumé / Abstract
The mental workload can be defined as the ratio of the task demands to the average of the maximal capacity for each individual. Among various available methods, one consists in formalising the own driver judgment about the workload experienced during a given situation. This approach, considered as 'subjective', is a global criteria, able to detect only important phenomenon, and has been used in addition to other objective measures such as drivers visual strategies and driving performance in two experimental situations: - ergonomic evaluation of implemented in-vehicle systems giving messages to the drivers about road events such as traffic jams and about navigation/guidance messages.- road safety consequences in using car phone. The driving activity load index (or dali), computed according to the same scoring than the nasa-tlx but adapted to the driving task, has been used in these two specific situations and the results are presented according to the driving context and the driver's age. In a more general manner, modality in using this tool in order to evaluate the mental workload is discussed.
