Résumé / Abstract
This research is part of the human engineering program developed in the french institute of research on transport and safety (INRETS). One of the aim of this program is to develop tools helping researchers in their ergonomics evaluations of new technologies such as in-vehicle information systems (ivis). This paper describes the first step of a work that will have to be developed in a long term time scale, taking into account its quite ambitious objective. More precisely, we describe here the first bases of a future tool using a computational driver model approach. In the first part, a brief historical overview of available models in human engineering areas is made. We focus on the advantages of cognitive simulation versus performance models in an ergonomics evaluation perspective of ivis. In the second part, the general architecture and the procedure of use of a future tool based on a driver 's computational model are described. We conclude about the future prospects of this approach. It is expected that the potential contributions of this work will be in terms of fundamental research and in terms of applied research, making available a tool usable by any professional such as transport engineers, designers and other researchers for ivis design and evaluation.
