Résumé / Abstract
Development of technologies in information systems will allow to improve the level of knowledge of the driver about many aspects such as weather and traffic conditions, route to follow,... With the implementation of in-vehicle systems, in connection with external network, the driver will have access to messages of a direct importance for his trip. In this framework, this paper describes an experimentation conducted in real road situation in order to investigate the use of a traffic information system prototype. The tested site is in the rhone-alpes area, in france, an area specifically difficult during summer time in terms of traffic congestions, because of the streams of traffic crossing at this point, coming back and going on the south cost. The system carminat / generation c1 gives information about the level of traffic density in real time. This information is displayed with the mean of a color map on a lcd screen implemented on the dash-board. Further details about origins and importance of the traffic jams are given at driver's requirement. Results showed that this type of information is obviously helpful for the driver in this context, but, considering the road safety issue, numerous cautions must be taken by system designers such as the legibility of the displayed information, the easiness of the driver / system dialogue, the reliability of the messages and the pace of the messages refreshing. Some recommendations are given according to these points. Furthermore, it must be noted that drivers have a tendency to use this system as a navigation one, which was not its initial purpose, and the map was not offering all the useful information to fulfil this new requirement revealed through this experimentation.
