Résumé / Abstract
A systematic medical recording of each road accident casualty in the 'département du Rhone' has been made since January 1st 1995. General information on the accidents is collected, paying specific attention to the description of injuries which are codified using the ais 90. In 1995, 7,871 accidents (vs. 3,521 'officially') and 9,109 casualties of which 7870 have been treated (vs. 4,817) were reported in our registry. The official statistics under-estimate the real situation for all categories of users. This under-estimate is important for users of two-wheeled vehicles and reaches its maximum where cyclists are concerned; it is all the greater as the injuries are less serious. Clearly, the system set up makes it possible to register a number of accidents and victims which are normally ignored.
