Résumé / Abstract
In this paper we present our findings regarding the decision making of older drivers under time pressure and uncertainty. We assume that drivers have short deliberation times in which to make decisions and that they therefore just consider a few decision criteria, (e.g., risk and consequence of actions). We hypothesize that driver performance in making decisions with short deliberation time and uncertain information is lower for older drivers. We observed the performance in real driving situations of fourteen young subjects and an equal number of old subjects. We asked the subjects to travel a route through a major city with ten preselected intersections. Each of these intersections are complex and presents the driver with uncertain information. The analysis consists of a comparison of performance for the two groups of subjects for each traffic intersection. We also examine the cues that the subjects used. The results add to the body of knowledge regarding the cognitive processes of older drivers, and should be of interest for the design of in-vehicle systems.
