Résumé / Abstract
The paper presents the results of a project aiming at the evaluation of short tests that can be alternatively used for inspection and maintenance (vm) programmes in Europe. For this purpose, a large number of in-use passenger cars from five countries (Greece, Germany, France, the Netherlands and the united kingdom) was tested according to a test protocol that included a wide variety of short tests (idle/high idle, steady state loaded and transient loaded tests), in addition to the legislated new European driving cycle and a number of real-world driving cycles. The test results are analysed in various ways, with the objective to define cost-effective um test procedures and examine the potential of periodic i/m programmes to reduce pollutant emissions and improved fuel economy of in-use cars. Moreover, the implications to the future legislative steps in the European Union are discussed.
